ROC – Praying with the children

Meeting Outline

8 August 2019

Glory to God for another meeting of the “Raising Orthodox Christians” group of mothers and young children today at the Monastery.

We started with The Lord’s Prayer, with both the mothers and the children participating. The children then played and coloured icons, while the mothers and Fr Thalassios had a discussion on the subject “Praying with the children”.

We discussed how important it is for the parents to pray together with the children from the time they are born, and as they grow watching the parents, they themselves voluntarily engage into prayer.

At the same time, the quiet private daily prayer of the parents is also very important in order to focus on God and pray with all our heart without distractions. This fervent prayer of the parents allows them to grow spiritually, something that is received by the children in the everyday life of the family.

The parents are the biggest examples for the children. That is the example that the children will receive and mimic, that is what we leave to the next generation of Orthodox Christians.

St Porphyrios said “…stop giving advice to your children unceasingly; rather, talk to them through prayer.”
