The path of love or the path of our ego, your choice

29th April, 2021

His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa delivered this sermon after the service on Holy Thursday evening.

‘I was not going to say anything, but it's a very big day today and I think I should say just a few things.

During all these days, we have two great examples in front of us. The one is the example of Christ. He was God and He became human. He gave up everything. He ended up giving up his life. He self emptied Himself, He emptied himself to the extreme. This is the example of love. This is the example of self emptiness.

And then we've got the example of the Jews, and Judas, which is the opposite. It's the example of selfishness. So basically, they wanted to keep everything for themselves. They were afraid that Christ would become a king. And they wanted to take away his power, even before he had any human power. And they ended up taking away even his life.

A similar example happened after the creation of the angel, Lucifer, whose name means the one who brings the light, he was the brightest of all the angels. And because of his ego, because he wanted a higher position, he ended up a devil of darkness, we have to choose.

They say that Hercules, who in Greek mythology was one of the heroes, a great hero. At some point in his life, he had to choose from two paths, the one was the path of virtue, and the other one was the path of evil. And he chose the path of virtue.

This is what we are called to do as well, to choose a path. So we either follow our ego, or we follow the path of love. The problem is that if we follow the path of our ego, our soul will die before we die. And our soul will stink, and if you remember the example of Herod, who killed all the infants to get to Christ and kill Christ when he was born, and how did he die? He fell down, and his body was full of worms, and he just died. This is how our soul will be if we follow our ego.

So we can choose here. And we might not realize it, but even within our families, we do crucify people around us, because if it were not, everyone would have been happy with us. And we will have nothing to argue about. But we follow our ego. And then, not only no one is happy with us, but we end up miserable as well. If anything, we need to consider that this life is extremely short. We might not exist tomorrow. So, we are called to make a choice. And without a doubt, we should choose the choice of love and not the choice of ego. Thank you.

All the best for a blessed Resurrection. And I hope that this Resurrection will mean something special for every one of us inside our hearts.’
